Chinese Junks have been used since time immemorial along the Coast of China and the Pacific littoral lands but they were known to have travelled to Ceylon, India, the East African Coast and the Mid-East since A.D. 800. The ships were relatively small and numerous, travelling in fleets, and were occasionally joined by Korean and the Japanese trading ships.

After Zhu Di ascended the throne in 1403 as Emperor he commissioned his Admiral Cheng Ho to enlarge and multiply the capacities of the Longjiang ship yards east of Nanking that led to a revolution in ship building. For the first time, Chinese Junks of 490 ft length and weighing around and above 1500 tons were built and launched with great frequency to such an extent that by 1417 the Emperor's Navy had four independent fleets toatlling around 400 ships.

This was the first navy on the lines of today's navies where ships for victualling & man-o-wars were clearly assigned their duties and were one coherent fighting force. The Chinese navy under Cheng Ho that visited Cochin, Calicut, Galle, Sohar, Mombasa and many other ports repeatedly for trade and diplomacy. It successfully subdued the Mallaccan pirates and controlled the shipping lanes of South-East Asia in a manner akin to the navies of today.

All ships were made from timber from the Chinese and Vietnam forests and efficiently built on modern lines without the help of electricity, cranes or power tools as we know them today. This makes them all the more admirable. All ships had compatmentalised construction with numerous bulkheads to provide independent compartments ( in case of damage at sea), and were among the first to use rudders and efficient stellar navigation.
